Verso lived alongside his mother Aline, his father Renoir, and his two sisters Clea and Alicia in Lumière. After the Fracture separated Lumière from the rest of the Continent, Aline went missing. Determined to find her as well as to fully investigate this new anomaly, Verso departed Lumière alongside his father and several others as part of a Search and Rescue expedition that came to be known as Expedition Zero.
Once the Expedition reached the Monolith, they were approached by a woman claiming to be Clea, who had previously gone missing as well. It was here that Verso and Renoir discovered the truth of the world: that it is merely a mirror of the real world, and that their family was a copy of the real world Dessendre family created by Aline, who became the Paintress following the Fracture. Up to this point, Verso was unaware of the fact that he was created as a replacement for his real life counterpart, whose death in a house fire devastated Aline and drove her to seeking solace within her son's childhood Canvas. Within the Canvas Verso survived the fire, while only Alicia was injured.
The Clea that greeted the Expedition at the Monolith also informed them that she was the real-life Clea Dessendre, and that she entered the Canvas to help the real-life Renoir banish Aline, whose extended stay had caused significant damage to her well-being. Clea then attempted to destroy the Expedition but was only partially successful, as the Painted Verso and Renoir were made immortal by Aline.
Around this time, Verso fell in love with a fellow Expeditioner named Julie. An incident in which he survived a blow that should have been fatal damaged Julie's trust in him, leading her to fear that he and Renoir had betrayed and killed the rest of Expedition Zero. With the help of her teammates, Julie captured and interrogated Verso, forcing him to fight back and kill the team and then her in the subsequent conflict.
Renoir and Verso returned to Lumière for a time but were treated with suspicion as the only survivors, and as such they left with Alicia and settled on the Continent. Renoir's desire to safeguard his family and in turn the Paintress eventually led to a falling out with Verso, who had grown disillusioned with his immortality and resented being the source of struggle in the real Dessendre family. He then dedicated himself to destroying the Paintress which would in turn free his mother, as well as provide him with the freedom to finally die. To that end he worked with many Expeditions, but none of them were successful. During his travels, he also befriended many local inhabitants, and was particularly close to Esquie and Monoco. Both were aware of the truth of the Canvas, and their relationship with him mirrored that of the real world.
In Monolith Year 49, Verso was once again approached by the real-world Clea, who informed him that the real-world Alicia had entered the Canvas to try and help Renoir bring Aline out. Alicia had been overwhelmed by Aline's Chroma, and had been reborn as Maelle in Lumière, temporarily losing her memories in the process. Clea requested that Verso watch over Alicia. Verso acquiesced to Clea's wishes and returned to Lumière several times over the next 16 years to check up on Maelle, who was entirely unaware of her true identity.
